Abstract

1304773 C 8 aromatics by catalytic reforming UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 30 June 1970 [2 July 1969] 31518/70 Heading C5E A C 8 -aromatic hydrocarbon mixture is produced by: (a) fractionating a naphtha feed to give an overhead fraction of end bp. 132- 135‹ C.; (b) catalytically reforming the overhead fraction at a severity to produce a reformate in accordance with the relationship between the C 9 paraffin plus naphthene (P+N) content of the overhead fraction and the octane No. (clear) of the reformate as follows: Cq (P+N) content Octane No. (clear) 2-5 vol. % 92-96 5-10 96-100 greater than 10 greater than 100 (c) passing the reformate into a deoctanizer to separate the C 8+ fraction from a fraction containing hydrocarbons having less than 8 carbon fraction; (d) passing the C 8+ fraction into a rerun fractionator to recover as overhead high purity C 8 aromatic hydrocarbons. The naphtha feed and/or the overhead fraction may be pretreated to remover N, S and O impurities. The reforming catalyst may be a group VIII metal containing halogen supported on Al 2 O 3 or an aluminosilicate.
