Abstract
Cycloalkanes are obtained by the hydrogenation of aromatic hydrocarbons boiling in the range 200 DEG -360 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a sulphide of a metal of Group 6 or 8 with at least 3,500 standard litres of hydrogen per kilogram of feed under a pressure of at least 230 kg./cm.2, the hydrogenation being effected at 370 DEG -440 DEG C. in the gaseous phase to obtain a product containing a cycloalkane or cycloalkanes in the C9-C16 range, containing more than 75% of saturated hydrocarbons, and the product boiling above 160 DEG C., being characterized by a lower calorific value above 8,800 cal./cm3, a viscosity below 50 centistokes at -40 DEG C. and a specific gravity above 0,85. Preferred feeds are coal tar aromatic fractions such as a technical grade phenanthrene; it may be treated with methanol to remove oxygenated, sulphurated and nitrogenated compounds. Suitable catalysts are molybdenum or tungsten sulphide or a mixture of one of these with nickel sulphides, alone or supported on activated coal or alumina. Light products boiling below 160 DEG C. are removed by distillation and excess hydrogen is recycled.
