Abstract

Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons or partially hydrogenated derivatives are hydrogenated to fully hydrogenated derivatives by passing entirely in the vapour phase at 20-100 atmos. partial hydrogen pressure and 200-500 DEG C. over a catalyst consisting of one or more Group 8 metals, e.g. nickel, cobalt or platinum, either alone or on a carrier and with or without small amounts of promoters such as thoria. The feed-stock, substantially free from sulphur, is passed with hydrogen or gases containing it sufficient to ensure a vapour phase and preferably in considerable excess which may be recycled. The feed may consist of mixtures of aromatic and hydroaromatic hydrocarbons which may also contain paraffins, olefins and naphthenes. In examples: (1) hot pressed naphthalene is preheated with hydrogen to 250 DEG C. and reacted at 300 DEG C. and 32 atmos. over nickel on kieselguhr to give decahydronaphthalene; (2) tetralin is similarly hydrogenated; (3) a coal tar boiling from 200-280 DEG C. and free of tar acids and bases which comprises mainly naphthalene and homologues is hydrogenated under similar conditions; (4) a 300-380 DEG C. coal tar, mainly anthracene, phenanthrene and higher, is hydrogenated in two stages, first at 300-330 DEG C. and 32 atmos. and then at 360-370 DEG C. and 55 atmos.
