Abstract

525,813. Desulphurizing hydrocarbons. YORKSHIRE TAR DISTILLERS, Ltd., MAXTED, E. B., and BILLBROUGH, S. Dec. 28, 1938, No. 37580. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] Coal-tar hydrocarbons are desulphurized under substantially non-cracking and non- hydrogenating conditions by passage with hydrogen or a gas containing free hydrogen at an elevated temperature over or through a catalyst consisting of or containing a metallic thiomolybdate in which the weight of molybdenum is at least equal to that of the other metal; the pressure may be atmospheric, reduced, or raised. Suitable catalysts are thiomolybdates of cobalt, nickel, iron, and zinc ; they may be on carriers, e.g., pumice bauxite, and kieselguhr. Suitable temperatures are 300-600‹C. The product may be freed from any hydrogen sulphide produced and retained, e.g., by washing with soda. For example, commercial benzol or commercial naphthalene is vaporized in a current of hydrogen and passed at 450‹C. and atmospheric pressure over cobalt thiomolybdate supported on bauxite. Toluol and anthracene may also be treated.
