Abstract

Sulphur compounds are removed from petroleum and other oils by passing the oil vapours at normal pressure together with hydrogen or hydrogen-containing gas over a catalyst consisting of nickel deposited on aluminium hydroxide, or other metals of the 8th group of the periodic system, especially platinum or palladium, deposited in a finely dispersed state on carbon and heating to a temperature not exceeding 350 DEG C. The treatment of amyl sulphide in this manner yields isopentane, and dibenzyl sulphide yields toluene (mainly) with some dibenzyl.ALSO:Hydrocarbons such as petroleum, shale oil, or crude benzol are freed from sulphur compounds by passing the oil vapours at normal pressure together with hydrogen or hydrogen-containing gas over a catalyst consisting of nickel deposited on aluminium hydroxide, or other metals of the 8th group of the Periodic system deposited in a finely dispersed state on carbon, and heating to a temperature not exceeding 350 DEG C. Platinum or palladium deposited on active charcoal may be used. Sulphides, thiophene and thiophane are thereby eliminated with the formation of hydrogen sulphide. The catalyst may be regenerated after use by heating in a current of air. The treatment of amyl sulphide in this manner yields isopentane, and dibenzyl sulphide yields toluene (mainly) with some dibenzyl.
