Abstract

Olefins having 2-4 carbon atoms and aromatic hydrocarbons are obtained by thermal or catalytic cracking of a liquid hydrocarbon cracking stock, recovering C2-C4 olefins, hydrogenating C5-200 DEG C. product to saturate olefins without affecting aromatics, separating the aromatics and recycling the non-aromatics to the cracking process. The cracking stock may be a crude petroleum or petroleum distillate or a tar or oil from degasification or gasification of solid fuels, particularly a light gasoline. After thermal cracking the gaseous products are separated and the 60 DEG -200 DEG C. liquid product selectively hydrogenated. If acetylenes or dienes are present these are preferably hydrogenated first to olefins at low temperature using a platinum metal catalyst to prevent polymerization in the subsequent hydrogenation over a cobalt-molybdenum catalyst. The aromatics may be separated by distillation or solvent extraction preferably after removing material boiling below 77 DEG C. and above 150 DEG C. which are recycled with the non-aromatics.
