Abstract

Ethylene is produced in a process wherein a hydrocarbon feedstock is pyrolysed to yield a product comprising ethylene, a fraction containing C3 and/or C4 hydrocarbons is separated from said product and is hydrogenated, and the hydrogenated fraction is pyrolysed to yield a further product comprising ethylene. The separated fraction may be (i) a C3 fraction boiling between - 50 and - 40 DEG C. and consisting essentially of propylene and propane; after hydrogenation of the propylene to propane, the fraction may be pyrolysed in admixture with ethane also separated from the first pyrolysis product, (ii) a C4 fraction boiling between - 15 DEG and + 5 DEG C.; or either a C3 or a C4 fraction or both in conjunction with (iii) a light naphtha having a final boiling-point of 80 DEG C. Hydrogenation may be carried out catalytically with hydrogen obtained from the residual pyrolysis gases. In the second pyrolysis the hydrogenated fraction may be pyrolysed in admixture with the hydrocarbon feedstock. The latter may be a naphtha, a light petroleum distillate or may comprise propane and/or n- or iso-butane. The first pyrolysis is effected in the presence of steam as a conventional "steam cracking" process.
