Abstract
A process for improving a hydrocarbon fraction consisting essentially of hydrocarbons boiling between 85 DEG and 200 DEG C. for the production of knock-stable gasoline by isomerization and dehydrogenation of the fraction, using a catalyst containing platinum or palladium is characterized in that n-pentane is added to the fraction to be treated in such a quantity that the resulting blend contains 20 to 50 per cent by weight of n-pentane. The mixture of n-pentane and hydrocarbon fraction may be conducted in the presence of hydrogen over a catalyst consisting of platinum or palladium or a compound of such a metal deposited on an acid-carrier, e.g. silica, alumina-silica or alumina containing halogen, at temperatures between about 400 DEG and 525 DEG C. and under pressures of between about 10-60 atmospheres. A number of reactors may be employed with reheating of the reaction mixture prior to its passage into each reactor. The unconverted n-pentane may be separated from the product and recycled to the process. The product may be used as a motor fuel or for blending with other fuels; fractions or mixtures of fractions may be used as fuel additives, such as the isopentane and C6, C7 and C8 fractions. In an example, a blend of 35 per cent n-pentane and 65 per cent of a gasoline fraction B.P. 85-130 DEG C. containing C7 and C8 naphthenes, paraffins and 3 per cent aromatics is treated in presence of hydrogen at 430 DEG C. and 30 atmos. pressure over a platinum containing platform catalyst and the product is distilled yielding a fraction of pentane and isopentane and a residual fraction of aromatic content 55 per cent.
