Abstract

1429331 Synthesis gas; fuel oil PULLMAN Inc 15 March 1973 [7 Nov 1972] 12468/73 Heading C5E Synthesis gas is produced by (a) introducing a hydrocarbon feedstock into a catalytic cracking zone in the presence of cracking catalyst, e.g. zeolite under fluid cracking conditions to produce an effluent which is then fractionated to produce a cracked naphtha fraction, (b) hydrogenating this fraction with hydrogen to saturate olefins and aromatics at least partially and produce a more saturated cracked naphtha fraction, and (c) introducing this so treated fraction and steam to a catalytic steam reforming unit to produce an effluent containing synthesis gas. The effluent from (c) may be CH 4 -enriched by adding a CH 4 containing fraction or by hydrogasification, methanation or CO 2 removal. The hydrocarbon feedstock, e.g. crude oil, topped petroleum or a heavy hydrocarbon fraction may be distilled to produce a virgin naphtha fraction, a light gas oil fraction and a heavy bottoms fraction wherein the heavy bottoms fraction is fed to the catalytic cracking zone, the virgin naphtha is blended with the more saturated cracked naphtha fraction from (b) and the light gas oil fraction is blended with part of the heavy bottoms fraction to produce a fuel oil. The fluid cracking catalyst is regenerated in a regeneration zone, producing steam as by-product for the steam reforming stage. A H 2 -rich gas is obtained from fractionation of the catalytic cracking effluent and this is used in the hydrogenation step.
