Abstract

A process for hydrogenating a liquid hydrocarbon stream comprises (a) mixing the hydrocarbon stream at a temperature below 216 DEG C. with a heated hydrogen-containing gaseous stream under conditions controlled to vaporize substantially instantaneously all the polymerizable components in the fraction, (b) introducing the mixture of step (a) into a reaction zone containing a hydrogenation catalyst, and (c) withdrawing the product from the reaction zone. The feed stock may be a pyrolysis gasoline or dripolene which has previously been partially hydrogenated. The dripolene or pyrolysis gasoline may be hydrogenated over platinum or palladium and fractionated; a fraction containing C6 to C8 aromatics is then processed according to the invention using a cobalt-molybdenum oxide catalyst. The process reduces gum-forming dienes. Pure aromatic hydrocarbons can be recovered from the C6-C8 fraction, e.g. by azeotropic distillation or liquid liquid extraction.
