Abstract

Hydrocarbons rich in cycloalkane hydrocarbons and in particular mixtures thereof completely free from olefins and containing at least 95% of fully saturated hydrocarbons are prepared by introducing an essentially aromatic raw material such as a fraction of coal tar, a hydrogenate of coal or a material of petroleum origin rich in polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons into a first hydrogenation stage in presence of a strongly hydrogenating catalyst comprising a sulphide of tungsten and/or nickel or alumina under a hydrogen pressure of 100 bars or above at temperatures not exceeding 450 DEG C., cooling the effluent from the first stage and introducing the effluent into a second stage using a catalyst comprising a sulphide of tungsten and/or nickel or alumina at a hydrogen pressure exceeding 100 bars, the reaction conditions and the temperature of the effluent being such that the upper limit of temperature in the second stage is less than the upper limit of temperature in the first stage and is between 260 DEG and 400 DEG C. and preferably 300 DEG to 380 DEG C. At least 3000 litres of hydrogen measured at S.T.P. are used per kilogram of starting material and any excess hydrogen is washed under pressure using various solvents to eliminate any hydrocarbons and is then recycled to the first hydrogenation stage. The product may be washed with selective solvents, e.g. methanol to remove oxygen, sulphur and nitrogen containing compounds and the final product may be distilled preferably in the absence of oxygen.
