Abstract
Petroleum gas oils are hydrocatalytically desulphurized by passing at a speed velocity of 0.5-20 v/v/hr. in admixture with up to 2000 SCF/B of added hydrogen over a sulphur-resistant hydrogenation catalyst at 750-820 DEG F. and at least 300 p.s.i.g.; sulphur in the hydrocarbons is converted into hydrogen sulphide which is removed from the treated hydrocarbons. The specified catalyst consists of or comprises the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum, as such or in combined form, incorporated with a metal oxide support, e.g. alumina. A recycle rate of about 1000 SCF/B may be used in which case much of the oil will be in the liquid phase. The hydrofining gas may be a catalytic reformer exit gas containing 70 per cent by volume of hydrogen. Examples are given of the treatment of straight-run gas oil, catalytically cracked recycle oil and mixtures of 80 per cent straight-run and 20 per cent catalytically cracked recycle oil.
