Abstract
A process for the desulphurization of asphaltic petroleum residues comprises contacting the residue with a desulphurization catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure and in the presence of hydrogen, there being a net hydrogen consumption, wherein there is also present from 10 to 100% volume by volume of residue of a lower boiling distillate petroleum fraction containing not more than 50% by volume of aromatic and olefin hydrocarbons. The lower boiling fraction may have a final boiling point of less than 450 DEG C., and may be a straight run fraction containing at least 0,1% wt. of sulphur. Suitable operating conditions are:-650 DEG -800 DEG F., up to 3000 p.s.i.g., space velocity 0,1-5 v./v./hr., and a hydrogen rate up to 10,000 S.CF/B. The catalyst may be one or more oxides or sulphides of metals from Groups VIa and VIII of the Periodic Table, suitably supported on a refractory oxide carrier, for example tungstennickel oxides and sulphides or cobalt-molybdenum oxides, supported on alumina.
