Abstract
Sodium and/or vanadium is removed from petroleum hydrocarbons by contacting at elevated temperature and pressure and in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst, consisting of or comprising the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum, as such or in combined form, supported on a metal oxide, e.g. alumina, which catalyst has lost activity for desulphurization after repeated regeneration. The process may be carried out at a temperature of 750-800 DEG F., a pressure of 500-1500 p.s.i.g., a space velocity of 0.5-5 v./v./hr. and a gas recycle rate of 1000-10,000 SCF/B. Crude oils and crude oil residues may be treated. The treatment may be followed by a hydrofixing treatment over fresh catalyst to remove sulphur.
