Abstract

1324167 Hydrotreating residual hydrocarbon oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 6 Oct 1970 [18 Nov 1969] 56357/69 Heading C5E In the catalytic hydroconversion of residual hydrocarbon oils, e.g. to remove sulphur, substantially in the liquid phase hydrogen sulphide and/or hydrogen sulphide precursor is added to the oil in an amount which corresponds to at least 0À5% wt. hydrogen sulphide, calculated on fresh oil, at the beginning of the process and which is decreased continuously or stepwise in the course of the process to less than 80% of the amount added at the beginning. The hydrogen sulphide or precursor can be provided by adding hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide, alkyl mercaptan or carbon disulphide to the oil or to the hydrogen or by recycling a portion of the product oil which has not been depressurized. The residual oil treated can be a topped crude oil or a long or short residue and can be pretreated by flashing, deasphalting or non-catalytic hydrorefining; visbreaker effluent or tar sand oil can be used. The catalyst used, suitably comprising cobalt and molybdenum on alumina, can be presulphided and can be used in a radial flow bed or in an axial flow bed with upflow or downflow of the oil. The hydrodesulphurization is carried out at 300-475‹ C. and 30-350 kg./cm<SP>2</SP>.
