Abstract
In the catalytic desulphurization of hydrocarbons by contact in the presence of hydrogen with a fluorine-containing cobalt molybdate or alumina catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, involving alternate periods of processing and regeneration of the catalyst to remove carbonaceous deposits, there is added during the processing period a small amount of a fluorine-containing compound so as to maintain the fluorine content and activity of the catalyst at the desired level. Suitable fluorine-containing compounds are dichlorodifluoromethane, tertiary butyl fluoride, and hydrogen fluoride; these may be added to the liquid or vaporized feedstock or to the hydrogen-rich recycle gas, either continuously or only during the early part of the processing period. A convenient method is to dissolve the compound in a small amount of the feedstock and introduce it into the reactor as required. Examples describe autofining processes. Specifications 719,627 and 747,663 are referred to.
