Abstract

In a process for the hydroforming of a naphtha fraction in the presence of a fixed bed of a catalyst comprising platinum or palladium on an alumina support (but excluding any catalyst when prepared by the process claimed in Specification 745,284) under conditions (including a pressure not exceeding 300 lbs. per sq. in.) such that the catalyst becomes rapidly contaminated with carbonaceous deposits, the hydroforming reaction is periodically interrupted after a period of, at the most, 48 hours and the catalyst bed subjected to regeneration with a free oxygen containing gas. Regeneration may take place at 900 DEG -1000 DEG F. at atmospheric pressure; diluted air containing, for example, 1-20 per cent by volume of oxygen may be used, and the oxygen content may be progressively increased. The duration of each hydroforming period is, for example, 0.25-4 hours and the regeneration period 0.5-4 times that of hydroforming. When fluoride-containing catalysts are used, the catalyst may be treated with hydrogen fluoride following or during the regeneration cycle.
