Abstract
Catalysts of platinum or palladium, supported on a refractory oxide support, e.g. silica or alumina, which are spent after use in a hydroforming zone, are contacted either with chlorine bromine or fluorine; or with a substance containing a halogen which is labile under the contacting conditions followed or accompanied by treatment with an oxidizing substance; so that during reactivation not more than 10 weight per cent of metal and 20 weight per cent of support is removed. In the process of the first method the halogen may be mixed with a little air or the catalyst may be burnt with oxygen or gases containing oxygen to remove carbonaceous deposits prior to halogen treatment. A small percentage of water vapour is necessary in treating with the gaseous halogen. In processes of the second method the halogen substances may be aqueous solutions hydrogen halides, thionyl chloride, sulphuryl chloride nitrosyl chloride ammonium chloride or metallic halides such as aluminium chloride. Nitric acid is the preferred oxidizing agent but perchloric acid, hypochlorous acid, metal nitrates and even oxygen gas may be used.
