Abstract
A substantially sulphur-free hydrocarbon fraction containing 0.001-1% wt. of nitrogen compounds is freed of nitrogen compounds by contacting it at elevated temperature and pressure and in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst comprising a platinum group metal on a support containing a major proportion of alumina and a minor proportion of one or more other oxides of Group III and IV elements, or phosphorus, calculated as P2O5, or halogen, calculated as the element. Boria and silica are preferred. If the original feedstock contains sulphur, it should be subjected to a preliminary conventional hydrocatalytic desulphurization. The operating conditions for the process of the invention are: 400-800 DEG F. 0-2000 p.s.i.g. 0.01-10 v./v./hr. 500-15000 SCFH/B.
