Abstract

In a method of activating a catalyst for the hydrocatalytic refining of lubricating oils which catalysts comprise Fe and Mo oxides and optionally also CoO, the catalyst is contacted at a temperature of at least 300 DEG C. in the presence of hydrogen with from 80 to 120 kg. of CS2 per metric ton of catalyst. In an example a catalyst containing Fe2O3, MoO3, CoO and Al2O3 was subject to treatment with (1) white oil of specified physical characteristics, (2) the same white oil containing 3% CS2 and (3) a Middle East spindle oil known to be effective for activation, under the following conditions: temp. 350 DEG C.; S.V.=1 /v.v/hr.; pressure 20 kg./cm.2. Flow rate of hydrogen= 20 v./v./hr. Time=48 hours. Comparative results of refining the same oil are set forth at a variety of temperatures.ALSO:Catalysts containing oxides of Fe, Mo (and optionally Co) on Al2O3 are activated at a temperature of at least 300 DEG C. in the presence of hydrogen with from 80-120 Kg. of CS2 per metric ton of catalyst. Preferably the CS2 is brought into contact with the catalyst in a carrier oil which does not itself activate the catalyst. Examples are given.
