Abstract
A mixture containing mannitol (with some sorbitol) is obtained by catalytically hydrogenating an aqueous solution of glucose and/or invert sugar in the presence of lime and a supported nickel catalyst under the following conditions: (a) a lime concentration of 0.25-1.5% based on the weight of glucose and/or invert sugar; (b) a nickel concentration of 0.2-2.0% based on the weight of sugar; (c) a ratio of the weight of nickel x catalyst activity to the weight of lime between 1.0 and 9.0; (d) a hydrogen pressure of 500-3000 p.s.i.; and (e) a temperature in the range 60-100 DEG C. The "catalyst activity" is defined and a method of calculating it is given. If desired, between 0.02 and 0.08% of calcium carbonate based on the weight of sugar may be added as buffering agent. Preferably, the ratio of the weight of nickel to that of lime is in the range 0.5: 1 to 3.0: 1. The catalyst may be filtered from the reduced solution and, if desired, mannitol and/or sorbitol recovered.
