Abstract

1350257 Lubricating oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 3 June 1971 [5 June 1970 16 April 1971] 18857/71 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Lubricating oils of high viscosity index are made by contacting a mineral oil with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising, on an oxidic carrier, 3-16 wt. per cent of one or more of Fe, Co and Ni, 6-24 wt. per cent of one or more of Cr, Mo and W and 1-20 wt. per cent (calculated as B 2 O 3 ) of boron. Vacuum distillates and deasphalted vacuum residues are treated at 350-550‹ C. and a pressure of 50- 250 bar. The catalyst can contain 1-6 wt. per cent F and 1-12 wt. per cent P; suitable carriers are alumina, silica, magnesia and tilania. The catalyst can be sulphided before use by contacting it with a sulphur-containing gas oil. The product can be dewaxed using a mixture of methyl ethyl ketone and toluene.
