Abstract

1324580 Hydrocracking and hydrodesulphurizing hydrocarbons TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 20 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 59165/71 Heading C5E Petroleum hydrocarbons of reduced sulphur content are produced by hydrocracking a residue-containing petroleum fraction, cooling the hydrocracked effluent and hydrodesulphurizing at least part of the effluent. The hydrocracking is carried out at 750-950‹ F. and 500-5000 p.s.i.g. using a catalyst comprising a Group VI metal, e.g. Cr, Mo or W, and a Group VIII metal, e.g. Fe, Co or Ni on a support having a surface area of at least 250 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. and a pore volume of at least 0À6 c.c. per gram. The hydrocracking catalyst can be in the oxide or sulphide form; suitable supports are alumina containing activated silica or boron oxide and alumina treated with hydrofluoric acid. The hydrocracked effluent can be cooled by indirect heat exchange or by the addition of an aromaticrich fraction such as a heavy cycle gas oil from a fluid catalytic cracking unit. The hydrodesulphurization is carried out at 600-850‹ F. and 500-5000 p.s.i.g. using a catalyst comprising a Group VI metal and a Group VIII metal, which can be in the oxide or sulphide form, on a support such as alumina, zirconia, silica or magnesia. The feed to the hydrocracking process can be a whole crude oil, shale oil, tar sand oil or vacuum residual and at least 50% of the charge can boil above 1000‹ F.; the hydrocracking is carried out so that 25-70% of the 1000‹ F. + portion of the charge is converted to material boiling below 1000‹ F.
