Abstract

1,194,960. Desulphurizing heavy hydrocarbon oils. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 3 Dec., 1968 [12 Dec., 1967], No. 57334/68. Heading C5E. Petroleum fractions having a Conradson Carbon Residue of at least 1% b.w. are hydrodesulphurized at elevated pressure and temperature over a supported catalyst comprising a compound of a Group VI metal, e.g. Mo or W, and one of Fe, Co or Ni, the catalyst having a surface area of at least 250 m<SP>2</SP>/g, a pore volume of at least 0À6 c.c./g. and a silica content of at least 2% b.w. of the catalyst composite. The preferred surface area is in the range 300 to 400 m<SP>2</SP>/g, with a maximum of 800 m<SP>2</SP>/g, and the pore volume may be up to 1À0 c.c./g. and the silica content may be up to 30% b.w. The catalyst support may include alumina, zirconia or magnesia. Reaction conditions are conventional. Feeds treated are typically crudes and residuals, including tar sand oil and shale oil.
