Abstract

A hydrocarbon oil boiling above 343 DEG C. and containing less than 1 p.p.m. nitrogen is hydrocracked in the presence of a hydrocracking catalyst at 288-454 DEG C. and a hydrogen pressure of 75-136 atmospheres. The oil is pretreated to reduce the nitrogen content by sulphuric acid treatment or hydrofining over an iron group metal oxide or sulphide composited if desired with a Group VI metal oxide or compound, at 260-482 DEG C. and 34-204 atmospheres followed by stripping to remove ammonia. The cracking catalyst comprises an acidic cracking support, e.g. a non-volatile halide other than a Group I and II metals, acidic composites of alumina, silica, zirconia, magnesia, and boria or a clay or a halided refractory oxide together with a hydrogenating component such as a Group VIII metal or oxide or sulphide thereof. The added hydrogen amount to 89-534 normal litres per litre of oil. The product recovered preferably boils below 204 DEG C. Specification 933,489 is referred to.
