Abstract

In the hydrocracking of petroleum hydrocarbons, contaminated with naturally occuring nitrogen compounds, in the presence of a Group VIII metal on an acidic cracking catalyst support at 260 DEG -538 DEG C. and 34-204 atmospheres, the feed is first hydrofined to a nitrogen content of less than 1 p.p.m. by contact with excess hydrogen and a catalyst comprising a Group VI metal and an iron group metal supported on a refractory metal oxide at 315 DEG -482 DEG C. and 34-204 atmospheres and separating the ammonia formed. In the hydrofining suitable space velocities are 0,5-2 vol./vol./hr. Ammonia is removed by washing with acid or stripping with an inert gas, e.g. hydrogen, natural gas, carbon monoxide, nitrogen or flue gas ammonia is removed from the stripping gas and recycle gas by contact with acid. Cracking is effected in the liquid phase using 89-534 normal litres of hydrogen per litre of feed. The cracking catalyst preferably contains a platinum metal if an iron group metal is used molybdenum is preferably also present as the metal or as molybdate or thiomolybdate.
