Abstract

1474109 Reforming hydrocarbons ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 3 May 1974 [7 May 1973] 19579/74 Heading C5E A catalyst comprising a porous support, 0À01 to 3À0 wt. per cent of at least one platinum group metal and 0À01 to 5% rhenium is used in the presence of hydrogen to reform a hydrocarbon feed containing 15-100 p.p.m. by weight of sulphur for a contact time such that 0À5 to 50 moles of sulphur per mole of rhenium on the catalyst is passed into the contact zone thereby reducing the inherent hydrocracking activity of said catalyst and then to reform a hydrocarbon chargestock containing less than 10 p.p.m. sulphur. The hydrocarbon feed and the hydrocarbon chargestock can be straightrun natural or synthetic gasoline, thermally or catalytically cracked gasoline or heavy naphtha boiling within the range 50-425‹ F. The said chargestock can be obtained by hydrodesulphurizing a sulphur-containing hydrocarbon which can be used as the said hydrocarbon feed; alternatively the said feed can be produced by adding sulphur compounds to a hydrocarbon which can be used as the said chargestock. In examples, a catalyst comprising an alumina support, Pt, Re and C1 is used at 300 p.s.i.g. and temperatures of 950‹ and 955‹ F. to reform naphtha feeds containing 32 p.p.m. and 47 p.p.m. sulphur, respectively, added as thiophene and 8 p.p.m. Cl added as chlorobenzene and then to reform the same naphtha without added thiophene.
