Abstract
Light distillates are purified down to a level of not more than 0.3 p.p.m.of sulphur, by removal of sulphur therefrom, by passing a mixture of the light distillate in vapour form and a hydrogenating gas containing oxides of carbon, the mixture containing at least 3 parts by volume of hydrocarbon per volume of hydrogen but containing a substantial excess of hydrogen over that required for reaction with unsaturated hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the mixture, over a hydrosulphurization catalyst comprising molybdenum supported on alumina and promoted by nickel, thereby converting sulphur present to hydrogen sulphide, which is subsequently removed from the distillate, for example by contacting with iron oxide. The process is preferably effected at 250-450 DEG C. and 5-50 atmos., the distillate being passed through the catalyst at 50-600 v./v./hr.
