Abstract
The hydrocracking of paraffins to obtain lower boiling paraffins having a higher iso to normal ratio than the feed is effected in the presence of a catalyst prepared by contacting alumina, preferably containing a hydrogenating metal of Group VIa or VIII, with a compound of the formula CXYCl2, in which X and Y are H, Cl, Br, F or SCl or together are O or S under non-reducing conditions and at a temperature such that free aluminium chloride is not formed. The feed preferably contains at least 90% paraffins containing 6-20 carbon atoms and is treated at 150-400 DEG C., 0-2000 p.s.i.g., and a L.H.S.V. of 0.05-10 with 0.01-20 mols. of hydrogen per mol. of hydrocarbon. The catalysts are described in Specification 953,187. Specification 953,189 also is referred to.
