Abstract

The isomerization of C4+ paraffins in the gasoline boiling range to obtain more highly branched products is effected in the presence of hydrogen at below 400 DEG F. with a catalyst prepared by contacting a hydrogen-containing alumina with a compound of the formula <FORM:0953189/C3/1> in which X and Y may each be H, Cl, Br, F, or SCl or together are O or S, under non-reducing conditions and at a temperature such that chlorine is taken up without the formation of free aluminium chloride (see Specification 953,187 [Divisions B1 and C1]). The catalyst may also contain 0.01-5% wt. of a hydrogenating metal, e.g. platinum or palladium and minor amounts of other refractory oxides, e.g. silica, titania, beryllia, zirconia or magnesia. The alumina should have a surface area above 250 m.2/g. and be treated to a chlorine content of 1-15% wt. or 2 x 10-4 to 3.5 x 10-4 g./m.2 o surface area. The hydrocarbon feedstock should be free from sulphur, water and aromatics and low in naphthenic content. Isomerization is effected at 50-400 DEG F., 0-2000 p.s.i.g., 0.05-10 vol./vol./hr. and 0.01-20 mols. hydrogen per mol. hydrocarbon. When converting normal paraffins, unconverted feed may be separated from the product, e.g. by molecular sieves, and recycled. Specifications 897,238, 899,378 and 926,995 also are referred to.
