Abstract

The isomerisation of C4 + paraffins to obtain more highly branched products is effected in the presence of hydrogen and the absence of a hydrogen halide promoter with a catalyst comprising an aluminium halide and a hydrogenating metal supported on alumina prepared from hydrated alumina containing 60-95% wt. of trihydrate alumina, the remainder being amorphous hydrated alumina, the resultant alumina after drying and calcination having a surface area of at least 350m.2/g. and containing pore sizes both below and above 300 ; in one form there are binodal peaks at 17-20 and 720-740 . Preferred components are 0.01-5% of platinum or palladium and 3-20% of aluminium chloride or bromide. Suitable process conditions are 50-400 DEG F., 0-2,000 p.s.i.g., 0.05-10 vol./vol./hr. and 0.01-20 mols hydrogen per mol of hydrocarbon. Isoparaffins may be removed from the feed and if desired from the product, unconverted material being recycled. Specification 830,882 is referred to.
