Abstract

1426401 Isomerizing paraffins BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 4 Sept 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 47305/73 Heading C5E A process for the isomerization of paraffin hydrocarbons in the gasoline boiling range comprises passing the feed having a water content of 0À5-5 p.p.m. wt. over a chemical drying agent to reduce the water content to below 0À5 p.p.m. wt. and then isomerizing the paraffin at 50-350‹ C. in the presence of H 2 using a catalyst comprising alumina, chlorine and a platinum group metal. The chemical drying agent may be an alkali metal or AlCl 3 or hydrolysable active chlorine on the surface of a support such as alumina. The isomerization may be carried out in two reactors in series, the first mainly serving to hydrogenate aromatic impurities in the feed.
