Abstract

1332666 Isomerizing paraffins BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 7 Sept 1971 [7 Oct 1970] 47586/70 Heading C5E In a process for isomerizing C 4 and higher paraffins the feedstock is first hydrogenated to convert aromatic impurities to naphthenes, then fractionated to remove cyclohexane and higher boiling materials and then isomerized at below 204‹ C. in the presence of hydrogen and an isomerization catalyst which does not contain an aluminium halide. The hydrogenation may be carried out at 50-400‹ C. and 30-2000 p.s.i.g. over a catalyst comprising 0À1-5 wt. per cent of a platinum group metal on a refractory support. The isomerization may be carried out at 10- 204‹ C. and 0-2000 p.s.i.g. over a catalyst comprising 0À01-5 wt. per cent Pt group metal on Al 2 O 3 which has been contacted with Cl 2 or a chlorine-containing compound (e.g. CCl 4 , CHCl 3 or CH 2 Cl 2 ) under non-reducing conditions at 149-593‹ C. such that chlorine is taken up by the alumina without the production of free AlCl 3 .
