Abstract

In the isomerization to branched or more highly branched chain paraffins of a fraction containing C6 paraffins and less than 10% by weight of C6 cycloparaffins but free of hydrocarbons boiling above cyclohexane, the isomerization is effected in the presence of an aluminium halide and a hydrogenating component on a refractory oxide and the product is fractionated to remove cyclohexane, and normal and/or singly branched iso-paraffins are recycled. The fraction may contain C5 and/or C4 hydrocarbons. The recycle will comprise n-hexane and methylcyclopentane and if desired methylpentanes and the product comprises dimethylbutanes with or without methylpentanes. The feed may also be fractionated, if desired in the same fractionator, to remove cyclohexane and/or branched chain hexanes. Benzene may be removed from the feed by acid treatment or hydrogenation to cyclohexane and cyclohexane recovered may be converted to benzene. The isomerization is effected at 50-400 DEG F., 0-2,000 p.s.i.g., and 0,05-10 v/v/hr. with 0,01-20 mols. of hydrogen per mol. of hydrocarbon over a catalyst comprising a refractory oxide, e.g. alumina, 3-20% of an aluminium halide, e.g. the chloride, and 0,01-5% a Group VIa or VIII metal, e.g. platinum or palladium.
