Abstract

1414495 Hydrodesulphurizing asphaltic oils GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 8 Dec 1972 [8 Dec 1971] 56786/72 HeadingC5E Sulphur-containing heavy feed oil, containing asphaltenes, resins and lower boiling saturates and aromatics, is hydrodesulphurized at a hydrogen partial pressure of 70-350 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> by contacting it downflow with hydrogen in a first catalytic hydrodesulphurization zone to produce an effluent having an increased aromatics concentration, flashing the effluent to separate hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide, light hydrocarbon gases and a low-boiling liquid fraction, containing a major amount of saturates and a minor amount of aromatics, from a flash residue having a higher concentration of aromatics than the total effluent, and continuing hydrodesulphurization of the oil in a second hydrodesulphurization zone; the first hydrodesulphurization being carried out using a catalyst comprising a Group VI metal and a Group VIII metal on alumina in the form of particles of diameter 0À64 to 1À3 mm. at a temperature of 360‹ to 427‹ C. which is increased within this range to compensate for catalyst ageing, a liquid hourly space velocity of 0À1 to 10 to remove at least 75% of the sulphur and to increase the aromatics concentration of the oil by at least 5% by weight by virtue of in situ production of aromatics. The catalysts used in both zones suitably comprise nickel-cobaltmolybdenum or cobalt-molybdenum on alumina,
