Abstract
Hydrocarbon fractions containing at least 0.001% weight nitrogen and boiling in the range 150-650 DEG C. are denitrogenated by contacting the fraction in the presence of hydrogen at a temperature of 260-482 DEG C. and a pressure of 2000-3000 p.s.i.g. with a catalyst comprising one or more hydrogenating components selected from metals of Groups VIa and VIII of the Periodic Table and compounds thereof, e.g. molybdenum oxide/cobalt oxide or tungsten-nickel sulphide on a mixed refractory oxide support consisting of 50-95 weight per cent of predominantly eta-alumina derived from a bayerite precursor, and 5-50 weight per cent of one or more other refractory oxides of elements of Groups III and IV of the Periodic Table, e.g. boria, silica, titania, and zirconia. The space velocity is preferably 0.1-10 v/v/hr. with a gas flow rate of 500-20,000 SCFH/B.
