Abstract
1471588 Hydrodesulphurization of oils BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 9 Oct 1975 [24 Oct 1974] 45994/74 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Hydrocarbons are hydrodesulphurized in the presence of catalysts comprising 1-50 wt. per cent of a Group VIA metal oxide (e.g. molybdenum trioxide) and a graphite-containing carbon having a basal plane surface area of at least 100 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., a ratio of BET surface area to basal plane surface area of at most 5 : 1 and a ratio of basal plane surface area to edge. surface area of at least 5 : 1. The catalysts may also contain an iron group (e.g. cobalt) component. The conversion conditions 150-500 C., 5-250 bars g., LHSV of 1-20, and an H 2 flow rate of 20-2000 m.<SP>3</SP>/m.<SP>3</SP> In the examples a mixture of butane and butene is made by the hydrodesulphurization of thiophen.
