Abstract

1471233 Hydrogenation; dehydrogenation BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 14 Aug 1975 [2 Sept 1974] 38182/74 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Hydrocarbons are hydrogenated, dehydrogenated or dehydrocyclized by contact with catalysts comprising 0À01-10 wt. per cent of a platinum group metal supported on a graphitecontaining carbon having a basal plane surface area of at least 100 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., a ratio of BET surface area to basal plane surface area of not more than 5 : 1 and a ratio of basal plane surface area to edge surface area of at least 5 : 1, optionally modified with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal ions. Hydrogenation may be by contacting an unsaturated compound with the catalyst at 0- 400‹ C., 1-210 bars g., LHSV of 0À01-20 and an H 2 : hydrocarbon molar ratio of 0À01-20 : 1. Examples describe the hydrogenation of benzene. Dehydrogenation and/or dehydrocyclization may be by contacting a C 6-10 n-paraffin with the catalyst at 200-650‹ C., 1-210 bars g., a LHSV of 0À01-20 and an H 2 : hydrocarbon molar ratio of 0À01-20 : 1. Examples describe the formation of benzene by the dehydrocyclization of n-hexane.
