Abstract

1,272,728. Selective hydrogenation. MARUZEN OIL CO. Ltd. 7 Jan., 1971 [26 Jan., 1970], No. 869/71. Heading C5E. C 4 or higher polyolefins and/or acetylenes are selectively hydrogenated in the presence of C 4 or higher monoolefins by treatment with H 2 in the presence of a copper-free Pd or Ni catalyst, there being present initially 1-50 mole per cent. of carbon monoxide (based on H 2 ) this amount being subsequently lowered to 0À05-1 mole per cent. The CO content may be lowered after the amount of CO contacted with the catalyst is at least 0À05 mole/gram. Suitable catalysts are Pd or Ni metals, or a sulphide or oxide thereof on a support such as Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 , MgO, TiO 2 or diatomaceous earth. Suitable conditions are 20-250‹ C. and up to 50 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> pressure. The feedstocks may comprise C 4-16 unsaturated hydrocarbons and may also contain paraffins and inert gases. Examples describe the selective hydrogenation of butadiene and vinylacetylene in C 4 -streams.
