Abstract

1435350 Treating heavy oils UOP Inc 7 Sept 1973 [8 Sept 1972] 42117/73 Heading C5E A sulphurous, ash- and asphaltene-containing hydrocarbon charge 1 is treated by deashing at 2 with a selective solvent 3 to provide a a solvent-lean ash-containing phase 4 and a solvent-rich, asphalatene-containing phase 5; the phase 5 is reacted with hydrogen 6 in contact with slurry of unsupported sulphide of Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo. Hf, Ta, Ti and/or V as catalyst and the reaction effluent 9 is separated at 10 into a metal-containing sludge 11 and a hydrocarbon phase 12; and the phase 12 is reacted with hydrogen at 14 using a catalyst comprising a porous carrier and a Cr, Mo, W and/or Group VIII metal component. The deashing is suitably carried out at 50-500‹ F. using as solvent a C 2-7 hydrocarbon, e.g. nheptane, or a naphtha boiling below 200‹ F. The hydrogenation at 8 can be carried out at 225-500‹ C and 500-5000 p.s.i.g. in the presence of 2-30 mole per cent hydrogen sulphide, e.g. using vanadium sulphide as catalyst. The hydrogenation at 14 can be carried out at a maximum catalyst bed temperature of 600-900‹ F. and 500-5000 p.s.i.g. using a catalyst, e.g. consisting of nickel and molybdenum on silica-alumina of on silicaalumina-boron phosphate. Suitable feedstocks are block oils; in an example tar sand oil is treated.
