Abstract

1420248 Hydrodesulphurization of heavy oils UOP Inc 11 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 22493/73 Heading C5E A black oil charge stock 1 is catalytically reacted with hydrogen at 3 and the effluent 4 is separated at 5, at substantially the same temperature and pressure, into a first liquid phase 6 and a first vaporous phase 7. Hydrogen sulphide is removed-at 12 from at least a portion 11 of the first vaporous phase to produce a hydrogen-rich stream 13 with which the liquid phase 6 is reacted in a second catalytic reaction zone 14. The effluent 19 from the zone 14 is separated at 20 to produce a second vaporous phase 2, of which at least a portion is recycled to the zone 3, and a second liquid phase 21. As shown the first vaporous phase 7 can be separated at 10 into a third vaporous phase 11 and a third liquid phase 15 from which a vent gas stream is separated at 16 leaving a recycle stream 9 and a product stream 18 comprising mainly heptane to light fuel oil. A water stream 8 can be incorporated in the feed to the second reactor 14 and is recovered from the cold separator 10. The feedstocks treated can be crude oils, atmospheric or vacuum residues, heavy cycle oil, tar sand oil or heavy gas oil. The catalytic hydrogenation in both zones 3 and 20 can be carried out at 200-3000 p.s.i.g. and 600-900‹ F. using a catalyst, such as Cr, Mo, W or the Group VIII metals as the metal, oxide or sulphide on a support, such as alumina, alumina-silica, mordenite, faujasite or zeolite A or U, which can comprise halogen, zinc and/or bismuth components.
