Abstract

A heavy gas oil fraction, which constitutes less than 50% of a total gas oil fraction which is the total distillate between the gasoline boiling range and 220 DEG C. and residue material with a viscosity at 50 DEG C. of 40 Engler, in admixture with a lower boiling petroleum distillate, the mixture being such that it cannot be obtained by simple distillation, is contacted in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst having a hydrogenating / dehydrogenating component supported on a base having isomerizing and/or cracking activity at a temperature of at least 371 DEG C. but below that at which substantial cracking occurs, a pressure of at least 7 kg./cm.2 and a space velocity such that the product is a gas oil having a pour point at least 5 DEG C. lower than the feedstock. The lower boiling distillate may be kerosene and may comprise 50-150% of the heavy gas oil. The hydrogenating/dehydrogenating catalyst component may be one or more elements or compounds of Groups VIa or VIII, e.g. molybdenum and/or cobalt oxide or platinum. The support may comprise a major proportion of alumina and a minor proportion of one or more oxides of Groups II, III and IV, e.g. silica, titania, zirconia and beryllia. The support may also contain one or more compounds of non-metallic elements of Groups III, IV and V, e.g. boron and phosphorus, and up to 15% by weight of halogen, e.g. fluorine and chlorine. Specifications 862,121, 908,288, 908,289, 928,460, 937,055 and 943,238 are referred to.
