Abstract

1,188,692. Cracking; hydrofining. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 21 Aug., 1967 [22 Aug., 1966], No. 38413/67. Heading C5E. A process for the production of high octane gasoline from a refractory oil feed having an average boiling point above gasoline boiling range and below heavy cycle oil boiling range, and containing at least 45% aromatics, of which the major single aromatic type is J-12, comprises (a) hydrotreating said refractory oil in the presence of a sulphur-resistant hydrotreating catalyst at a pressure within the range of from 27.2 to 136 atmospheres gauge, and a temperature within the range of from 500‹ F. to 850‹ F. in the hydrotreating zone, (b) recovering resulting normally liquid, hydrotreated product containing at least 40 volume percent aromatics, of which the major single aromatics type is J-8, (c) cracking at least a portion of said hydrotreated product in the presence of a cracking catalyst, (d) recovering from the resulting cracked product a gasoline having an F-1 clear octane number of at least 95. and containing at least 45 volume percent aromatics of which the major single aromatic type is J-6, and (e) separately recovering from the cracked product a second refractory oil having an average boiling point above gasoline boiling range, and containing J-12 as the major single aromatic type. In one embodiment a gas oil feed and a heavy cycle oil originating from the process are catalytically cracked, the product is separated into a first high octane gasoline, a heavy cycle oil which is recycled and a first refractory oil, the first refractory oil is then mixed with a second refractory oil originating from the process, the mixture is hydrotreated and at least a portion of the product cracked in a second catalytic cracker to produce a second high octane gasoline and a second refractory oil which is recycled. In a second embodiment a gas oil feed, a cycle oil and a hydrotreated product originating from the process are cracked in a catalytic cracking zone, the product is separated into gasoline, cycle oil and refractory oil, the cycle oil is recycled, the refractory oil is hydrotreated and at least a portion of the product is recycled to form the hydrotreated product which is added to the feed. The cracking catalyst may be silicaalumina, silica-magnesia, silica-zirconia, acidactivated clay, or a zeolite. The hydrotreating catalyst may comprise a silica-alumina support bearing at least one metal or metal compound from Group VI or Group VIII of the Periodic Table, for example tungsten and/or molybdenum along with nickel and/or cobalt; other supports such as alumina, silica-zirconia, silica-magnesia, zeolites, or inorganic oxide matrices containing crystalline aluminosilicates may also be used; other hydrogenerating metals which may be used include platinum and palladium.
