Abstract

A petroleum feed stock having an aromatic content of not more than 10% by volume, a basic nitrogen content of less than 25 p.p.m. and having 10% and 90% distillation points within the range 200 DEG -450 DEG F. is upgraded by contacting with at least 1500 S.C.F. of hydrogen per barrel of feed and a hydrogenating catalyst on an active acidic cracking support in an isocracking zone at at least 200 p.s.i.g., and at 300 DEG -700 DEG F. The feed may be a straightrun fraction or a raffinate obtained after separating aromatic hydrocarbons from a catalytic reformate. Nitrogen content should be reduced if necessary, e.g. by hydrofining to a total nitrogen content below 100 p.p.m. The catalyst may be a Group Ib, IIb, VI or VIII metal or oxide or sulphide thereof and the support which should have a Cat. A cracking activity of at least 25 may be silica-alumina, silica-magnesia, silica-alumina-zirconia, or an acid treated clay. The hydrogen consumption is preferably at least 1,000 S.C.F. per barrel of feed converted to material boiling below 200 DEG F. Space velocities of 0,2-5 vol./vol./hr. are used and conversions are maintained at 20-70% by increasing the temperature steadily or incrementally. Material boiling above 200 DEG F. may be used as jet fuel or recycled. The subject matter of Specification 850,933 is disclaimed.
