Abstract
Lubricating oil and furnace or lower boiling oil are obtained from a distillate fraction boiling above 357 DEG C. and containing lubricating oil components or a mixture of such a fraction with a deasphalted residuum by contacting with hydrogen and a catalyst comprising a hydrogenating component on a cracking support having an activity above 25 on the Kellogg scale at 343-454 DEG C., above 105 kg./cm.2 hydrogen partial pressure, and a space velocity of 0.2-10, distilling to recover products boiling below 357 DEG C. and a higher boiling fraction containing lubricating oil components part of which is treated to recover a finished lubricating oil and the remainder being recycled. The catalyst is a Group VIA and/or VIII metal or oxide or sulphide thereof on silica-alumina or silica-magnesia. Hydrogen rate is 9-360 SCM per litre and the recycle rate 15-250% of fresh feed. The lubricating oil product is dewaxed, wax being recovered as product or recycled.
