Abstract
Hydrocarbon oils are cracked in the presence of hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure with a catalyst comprising fluorine and at least one metal of the iron group of the Periodic Table of Elements intimately associated with an acid-acting support comprising at least one refractory oxide, the intimate association having been achieved by precipitating the oxide or oxides in hydrogel form in the presence of an aqueous solution of one or more compounds of the metal or metals. The support comprises silica and at least one of alumina, zirconia or boria. The catalyst preferably comprises 0.1% to 25% by weight of the iron group metal and 0.1% to 5% by weight of flourine. The hydrocarbon oils used boil above the gasoline boiling range, e.g. 232 DEG to 510 DEG C., and may be pretreated, e.g. by mild hydrogenation to remove coke-forming constituents and to reduce the sulphur content to below 0.1% by weight and the nitrogen content to less than 75 p.p.m. The cracking process takes place at 260 DEG to 454 DEG C., 10.5 to 210 atmospheres gauge, an L.H.SV of 0.2 to 10 litres of oil per litre of catalyst and a hydrogen to oil mole ratio of 5: 1 to 50: 1.
