Abstract

A process for removing nitrogen from a nitrogen containing hydrocarbon feedstock comprises contacting the feedstock with hydrogen in the presence of a halogen containing dual component hydro-cracking catalyst comprising nickel and tungsten as the hydrogenating components supported on a siliceous cracking carrier having an activity index greater than 40, at a temperature from 260 DEG to 454 DEG C., a hydrogen partial pressure above 49 kilograms per sq. centimetre, a liquid hourly space velocity from 0.5 to 5.0 volumes of hydrocarbon feedstock per volume of catalyst per hour and a hydrogen feed rate of more than 17.8 standard cubic metres per 100 metres of feedstock, the hydrogenating components comprising from 5 to 40% by weight based upon total catalyst of nickel plus tungsten and from 0.5 to 4% by weight based upon total catalyst of combined halogen and the cracking carrier comprising from 10 to 90% by weight based upon the carrier of silica. The carrier may be silica-alumina and may also contain zirconia, thoria or magnesia. It preferably has a surface area of more than 450 square metres per gram. The feedstock may be a furnace oil boiling from 177 DEG to 343 DEG C. with 2000 p.p.m. of nitrogen or a gas oil boiling from 343 DEG to 593 DEG C. with up to 6000 p.p.m. nitrogen. If desired, the conditions of temperature and pressure may be chosen so that a small amount, about 10%, of hydro-cracking takes place. Depending upon the nitrogen content of the feedstock the nitrogen content of the product may be as low as 0.1%.
