Abstract

1315559 Hydrofining; hydrocracking ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 10 Aug 1970 38453/70 Heading C5E A high end point petroleum hydrocarbon feed 1, containing nitrogen and sulphur compounds, is catalytically hydrofined at 2 at 500-850‹ F. and 500-3000 p.s.i.g. and the effluent treated by catalytic hydrocracking in a first hydrocracking zone 5 at 500-850‹ F. and 500-3000 p.s.i.g. using a catalyst comprising a crystalling alumino-silicate zeolite and a platinum group metal, the effluent from 5 is fractionated at 12 into a product fuel fraction 14, a nitrogen containing bottoms fraction 17 having an initial boiling point of 725-775‹ F. which is recycled to the hydrofining zone, and a fraction 15 boiling within the range 350-775‹ F. and containing less than 10 p.p.m. nitrogen which is hydrocracked in a second hydrocracking zone 16 using a catalyst comprising a Group VIb and/or VIII metal on a crystalline alumino-silicate zeolite at 400-700‹ F. and 200-2000 p.s.i.g., the effluent from 16 is separated at 25 into a bottoms fraction 29, which is recycled to the second hydrocracking zone, and fuel fractions. The feed can contain 0À2-4 wt. per cent sulphur, 50-4000 p.p.m. nitrogen and 20-50% aromatics (15-30% of which is polyclic aromatics). Suitable feeds boil in the range 400- 1050‹ F. and are cycle oils from thermal and catalytic cracking, coker gas oil, virgin gas oils and mixtures of these and can contain steam cracked fractions and coker naphtha. Suitable hydrofining catalysts comprise oxides or sulphides Gr, Mo, Fe, Ni or W on alumina, silica, silica-alumina, bauxite or magnesia, e.g. cobalt molybdate on silica stabilized alumina. Suitable hydrocracking catalysts for the first stage comprise a zeolite support, which can have been base exchanged and which can contain Pd as the hydrogenation component. Suitable hydrocracking catalysts for the second stage contain either a platinum group metal, e.g. Pd on zeolite "Y", or Mo, W, Co and/or Ni and can be sulphided.
