Abstract

Gasoline distillates obtained as the result of cracking operations are refined by contacting them with a catalyst comprising 0.1 to 10 per cent by weight of hydrous aluminium oxide supported on silica gel, under polymerizing conditions of temperature and pressure such that olefin hydrocarbons and sulphur-containing compounds are converted to compounds boiling above the gasoline boiling range, and then fractionating the effluent from the catalyst zone to eliminate these high-boiling products. The gasoline distillates may be derived from thermal or catalytic cracking processes and may be clay-treated, for example by treatment in the vapour phase with fuller's earth, prior to contacting with the silica-alumina catalyst. The refined gasoline distillates are useful as aviation gasoline blending stocks.
