Abstract

Aviation fuel is obtained by fractionally distilling the product of a hydrocarbon oil cracking reaction into two or three fractions, one boiling from 110 DEG F. to a temperature between 210 DEG and 270 DEG F., and another fraction boiling from a temperature between 210 DEG and 270 DEG to 330 DEG F., with or without an intermediate fraction boiling between the upper limit of the first fraction and the lower limit of the second, subjecting the first fraction to non-destructive catalytic hydrogenation, treating the second fraction with concentrated sulphuric acid followed by redistillation, submitting the intermediate fraction to either treatment, and finally combining the processed fractions. The second fraction is preferably recracked before acid treatment. Gas oil is cracked catalytically in unit 1 and the products are fractionated in column 3 from which a naphtha of boiling range 110 DEG F. to 330 DEG F. is withdrawn through line 7 and fractionated in column 8. A 110 DEG to 210 DEG F. fraction, taken off <PICT:0589426/III/1> through line 9, is hydrogenated in unit 12 at a temperature between 400 DEG and 700 DEG F. and under a pressure between 100 and 750 lbs. per square inch using a mixed sulphide catalyst. The hydrogenated product is collected in accumulator 14. An intermediate naphtha fraction of boiling range 210 DEG to 270 DEG F., taken off from column 8 through line 10, is treated with acid in unit 18, then fed to still 20, from which refined distillate is collected in accumulator 22. The high boiling naphtha fraction, range 270 DEG to 330 DEG F., from column 8 is withdrawn through line 11, cracked either thermally or catalytically in unit 25, treated with acid in unit 27, and then distilled in still 20. The products from accumulators 14 and 22 are combined in line 16 and blended with isoparaffins from supply 33.
